FAQ's Answered

Crim High School will be converted to an Open Campus in order to support those students seeking to attend school with a more flexible/non-traditional schedule. This conversion is consistent with the BuildSmart recommendation. In order to facilitate this conversion, the current attendance zone for Crim High School will be displaced. The proposal with regards to the attendance zone is as follows:

The Proposal

The attendance zone for Alonzo A. Crim HS will be eliminated in association with the establishment of the school as a non-traditional school operating as an open campus.

The residences and the associated students will be reassigned to the neighboring high schools - Grady High School and Southside High School.

Students living in East Lake (north of Memorial Drive) and Kirkwood following the Toomer/East Lake to Coan feeder pattern will be assigned to Grady High School located at 929 Charles Allen Dr, NE.

Students living in East Atlanta, East Lake (south of Memorial Drive), Reynoldstown and the Villages of East Lake following the Burgess-Peterson/Drew Charter/East Lake/Whitefoord to Coan feeder pattern will be assigned to Southside High School located at 801 Glenwood Ave, SE.

Southside High School will have an approximate enrollment of 1345 .

Grady High School will have an approximate enrollment of 1220.

Why This Proposal?

Allows the school system to offer students a means to complete their secondary education while also meeting the challenges of their everyday lives

Supports the instructional initiatives of APS

Supports maximizing the utilization of all operating facilities in a geographical cluster

Develops zone boundaries that will minimize overcrowding

Limits disruption to neighborhoods.

Allows clean-up of some school zones based on neighborhood, natural and/or physical boundaries

Please Note: Based on comments received as a result of the formal public hearing held Thursday, March 3, 2005 and subsequent community meetings held Tuesday, March 15, 2005 and Thursday, March 31, 2005, the original staff proposal has been modified slightly.

At the east end of the proposed zones, Memorial Drive is used at the physical boundary.

The use of this line as the boundary, facilitates a more logical travel pattern.
